Subject: [franklin-users] Franklin Stabilization and I/O Upgrade Plans
Author: Francesca Verdier <fverdier_at_lbl.gov>
Date: 2009-03-11 12:52:15
Dear Franklin users, NERSC and Cray are developing plans to make improvements to Franklin that address stability and I/O performance. The improvements include configuration changes, additional I/O hardware, and a minor operating system upgrade with bug fixes. These changes will be implemented from March to April 2009. More information on these plans: http://www.nersc.gov/nusers/systems/franklin/IO_upgrade.php First Maintenance Scheduled for March 17; 7 AM - 11 PM Pacific -------------------------------------------------------------- Additional outages to perform I/O hardware upgrades are scheduled on March 24, March 31, and April 6. ALL /scratch DATA will be PERMANENTLY ERASED on Monday, April 6 --------------------------------------------------------------- Due to the installation of new I/O hardware and other stability improvements the /scratch file system must be reformatted. In addition, /scratch will be separated into two file systems. This will improve availability in the event of hardware failures, will improve "metadata operations" such as issuing the ls command, and has the potential of improving contention and isolating the impact of large IO jobs. The total number of nodes used for serving I/O will be more than doubled and each of the two scratch file systems will have the bandwidth of the existing /scratch. Information on how to use two scratch file systems will be available later in March. Maximum Batch Wallclock Limit Set to 24 Hours --------------------------------------------- In order to facilitate draining the queues during the upgrade, and to give access to more user jobs, the maximum wall limit will be set to 24 hours effective March 17. We expect to return to a limit of 36 hours sometime this summer. If you have any questions, please contact consult_at_nersc_dot_gov.
