Subject: [Users] NERSC HPSS upgrade - 2nd announcement
Author: Eric Hjort <ELHjort_at_lbl.gov>

Greetings NERSC HPSS user, This serves as the 2nd announcement for an upcoming system outage for the Regent HPSS system. This system is also known as "hpss" when connecting to HPSS and is intended primarily for system backup data. If you connect to "archive" or you simply execute HSI without specifying a system name, you automatically connect to Archive HPSS and this announcement does not apply to you. If you connect to HPSS by specifying "hpss" then you use the HPSS Regent system and details of actions you will need to take upon completion of the upgrade are included below. Regent HPSS will begin the upgrade by making the system unavailable beginning at 8:00am on Tuesday, 9 September 2008. The system is expected to be returned to users by 8:00am on Thursday, 11 September 2008. Some important details: HPSS authentication and accounts are now integrated with the NERSC Information Management (NIM) server. You no longer access auth.nersc.gov or utilize DCE usernames or passwords. DCE passwords and FTP encrypted password strings will no longer work after 11 Sep 08. Although you must generate a new password for use with Regent HPSS, and may place the new password in your .netrc file, you should be careful not to disturb the Archive HPSS password or contents in your .netrc file. The old password and authentication process (visiting auth.nersc.gov) will still be in effect for the Archive HPSS system until it is upgraded at a later date. 1. Downloading new HPSS clients: If you use HSI or HTAR from a non-NERSC computational system, you must download a new client from https://www.nersc.gov/projects/download/hpss/ Failure to download a new client will result in a failed authentication request. Using a new client to access the Archive HPSS system will result in a hang during initial HSI/HTAR startup. You must use a v3.4+ HSI or HTAR client to communicate with Regent HPSS and a v2.13 client to communicate with Archive HPSS. The NERSC computational systems are updated by the Mass Storage Group and will already have the new HSI, HTAR and pftp clients upon completion of the upgrade. 2. New authentication method, generating a new HPSS password: Every user must generate a new password to access HPSS Regent after the upgrade. To do so: (a.) Use a web browser to access http://nim.nersc.gov (b.) Login using your NIM password (same as other NERSC production systems) (c.) Select new option under Action called Generate HPSS Token (d.) For access from any NERSC system, use the encrypted string provided at the top of the frame. For access from a system outside of NERSC, enter the IP address of the system and generate a new encrypted string. (e.) Use your NIM username and this new password to login to HPSS with HSI, HTAR, pftp or FTP. You may place the string in a .netrc file in your home directory for HSI, HTAR, pftp, and some FTP clients to use for auto-authenticated access to HPSS. For details, see http://www.nersc.gov/nusers/systems/hpss/accounts_passwords.php If you add the new HPSS token to your .netrc file, ensure you replace any existing stanzas with "hpss" or "hpss.nersc.gov" but leave the archive HPSS stanzas alone. 3. Note the new location of home directories. Previous to the upgrade, a user's home directory could be located anywhere in the HPSS namespace. After the upgrade, home directories will now be in /home/<first initial of moniker>/<moniker>. For example, user 'franky' will be in /home/f/franky after logging into Regent HPSS. We have moved your home directory to this location and placed a symbolic link from your old homedir to this location. If you have scripts that hardcode or reference the old path, please update them accordingly. 4. Change in startup parameters for HSI and HTAR: When using HSI or HTAR, users could previously execute: $ hsi hpss And they would be connected to the Regent HPSS system. With the new version of HSI and HTAR, users must specify the HPSS system they want to connect to with the -s option: $ hsi -s hpss If a user tries accessing HPSS with the old syntax, HSI will interpret "hpss" as an argument to the command and will fail to connect them to the Regent HPSS system. _______________________________________________ Users mailing list Users@nersc.gov
