Deadline Extended for NSTA New Science Teacher Academy

NSTA will select 185 teachers from across the country to participate as fellows in the 2009 Academy. NSTA Fellows chosen for the program receive a comprehensive membership package, online mentoring with trained mentors who teach in the same discipline, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of web-based professional development activities, including web seminars. In addition, each NSTA Fellow receives financial support to attend in NSTA's National Conference on Science Education, taking place in Philadelphia, March 17–21, 2010.

As a cornerstone to building exceptional science educators for the future, this special Academy should be considered by new science teachers. Science teachers located throughout the country who will be entering their second or third year of teaching and whose schedule is a minimum of 51 percent middle or high school science are encouraged to apply. Last year, more than 800 applications were received, and 185 teachers from 49 states and the District of Columbia were selected to participate.

The deadline to submit applications for the 2009 NSTA New Science Teacher Academy has been extended to June 30, 2009. For more information about the NSTA New Science Teacher Academy or to learn how to apply to become a fellow, please visit www.nsta.org/academy.

Today in Science History

On May 11 in 1918, Richard Feynman, renowned for his skill as a lecturer, for his ability to play bongo drums at parties, and for his reworking the field of quantum electrodynamics (which deals with interactions between subatomic particles and energy radiations, for which he shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics), is born in New York City. Feynman diagrams are simple, visual expressions of mathematically complicated particle phenomena.
