OSTI Helps Citizens Find DOE Legacy Research

A free online tool for search and retrieval of legacy research sponsored by and/or related to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has been enhanced. Now, citizens and researchers can retrieve science information from 1948 to the present using an "alerts" service, a "refine search" tool, new fielded search options, navigation enhancements, and featured highlights.

ECD, or Energy Citations Database, provides access to over two million scientific research citations with continued growth through regular updates. Bibliographic citations within the database identify research documents of interest and provide patrons with access to electronic full text or, when full text is unavailable from the database, information to assist in obtaining the document. There are over 145,000 electronic full-text documents, primarily from 1994 forward, available via the database.

The free and convenient "alerts" service allows patrons to set up, with registration, a weekly e-mail notification on science topics of interest. Registration includes establishment of an e-mail address and a password. Patrons are notified of verification of service by e-mail. The service allows patrons to create, edit and/or cancel alerts.

Developed with the science-attentive citizen in mind, ECD (or Energy Citations Database) includes bibliographic citations of literature in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science, and related disciplines. It includes citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents.

ECD was developed by DOE's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI). For sixty years, OSTI has made R&D (research and development) findings available and useful to DOE researchers and the American people. OSTI ensures superior access to quality content through its suite of Web tools. OSTI operates on the principle that speeding the sharing of knowledge accelerates discovery.
