INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Eight days after President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for Indiana, nearly $734,000 in disaster assistance grants have been approved. Federal and state recovery officials announced that today a total of 464 residents have applied for disaster assistance in the 13 designated Indiana counties.
The following is an update of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) recovery activities as of close of business Thursday, April 30.
- 464 individuals (homeowners, renters and business owners) have applied for assistance in the 13 counties designated for Individual Assistance (IA). Designated counties are Allen, Carroll, DeKalb, Fulton, Jasper, Kosciusko, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Noble, Pulaski, White and Whitley.
- $733,565 in grants have been approved through the Individuals and Household Program. This assistance may be used for temporary disaster housing assistance; repair of disaster-damaged, uninsured homes back to safe, sanitary and functional conditions; and for replacement grants for serious, disaster-related needs and expenses not covered by insurance or other assistance programs.
- 314 applications have been issued by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). SBA officials encourage anyone who has received an application from the SBA to return it as soon as possible in order to be eligible for any further assistance.
- 60 people have visited one of the five Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) that are or have been temporarily opened in various locations to help meet the needs of disaster victims.
Federal and state officials urge homeowners, renters and businesses affected by the severe storms and flooding March 8 - 14, to apply immediately by calling 1-800-621-FEMA or for those with hearing or visual impairments call TTY 1-800-462-7585. The FEMA registration/helpline numbers are operational everyday from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. (EDT), seven days a week. On-line registration is available at www.disasterassistance.gov., 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
