FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- City of Industry, CA -- March 26, 2009 Union International Food Company of City of Industry, CA is recalling their packaged peanut products shipped prior to March 13, 2009 because they were packaged using peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of America's Plainview, Texas facility because of the potential for Salmonella contamination.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The affected products go by the brand name “Lian How” and the red label indicates "Peanuts" in both English and Chinese with “PACKED BY UNION INTERNATIONAL FOOD CO.” at City of Industry printed on the bottom.  There is no indication of an expiration date.  The peanuts from this source were sold by the company prior to March 13, 2009.  The products were distributed throughout Southern California to wholesalers and restaurants by truck delivery.

No known illnesses or complaints have ever been reported to date in connection with any of the Union International Food Company peanut products.

Customers who have purchased the affected products are urged to return to them to Union International Food Company for a full refund or exchange. Customers with questions may contact the company at 1-626-854-8880.
