Sahale Snacks Inc. Voluntarily Initiates a Nationwide and Limited International Recall of Ksar Pistachio Nut Blend and Marrakesh Pistachio Nut Blend Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- April 8, 2009 -- Sahale Snacks, Inc. of Seattle, Washington is voluntarily recalling 2 oz Ksar Pistachios Nut Blend, 5 oz Ksar Pistachios Nut Blend and 4 oz Harry & David Marrakesh Pistachios Nut Blend, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.  The products were manufactured using pistachios recalled by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. because they may be contaminated with SalmonellaSalmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. 

Products were distributed nationwide as well as to Canada, Panama, The Philippines, and the Dominican Republic.  Products were sold through retail stores and on-line retailers via the internet.  The Marrakesh Pistachios Nut Blends are packaged by Sahale Snacks and sold in Harry & David stores nationwide.

The Ksar Pistachios Nut Blends are packaged in 2.0 oz and 5.0 oz green plastic heat-sealed bags and labeled as “SAHALE SNACKS NUT BLEND KSAR PISTACHIOS WITH SESAME SEEDS, PEPITAS, FIG + MOROCCAN HARISSA”.

The Marrakesh Pistachios Nut Blend is packaged in a 4.0oz red plastic heat-sealed bags and labeled as “SAHALE SNACKS HARRY & DAVID EXCLUSIVE NUT BLEND MARRAKESH PISTACHIOS WITH POMEGRANATE, SEA SALT + MARASH PEPPER.”

There have been no cases of Salmonellosis or illnesses reported to date in connection with these products and the company is issuing this recall strictly as a precaution. The recall was initiated after Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. expanded their recall of pistachio products on April 6, 2009.  Sahale Snacks Inc. has informed the FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Consumers who have purchased the affected 2 oz Ksar Pistachio Nut Blend, 5 oz Ksar Pistachio Nut Blend and 4 oz Marrakesh Nut Blend are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
