Janzen Farms RECALLS Roasted, Salted Pistachios in the Shell BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE HEALTH RISK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Dayton, OR -- April 17, 2009 --- Janzen Farms of Dayton, Oregon is recalling eighteen (18) 1 lb bags of Pistachios Inshell because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The product was manufactured using pistachios recalled by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Ten (10) – 1 lb bags were distributed in Lynnwood, Washington and eight (8) – 1lb bags in Dayton, Oregon, through retail stores. Products were sold from February 1, 2009 through April 10, 2009. Pistachios sold after this date are not affected by the recall.

The products were sold in 1 lb clear plastic bags closed with a twist tie with a white label with black lettering stating “Pistachios Inshell Roasted and Salted” and the firm name. There is no lot or UPC code.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the pistachio product received was manufactured using pistachios from Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. Janzen Farms has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Consumers who have purchased Janzen Farms 1 lb bags of pistachios are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 503-868-7353, 8:00-5:00pm PDT, Monday-Friday.
