Harry And David Initiates Nationwide Recall Of Pistachio Nut Food Items: Caramels And Clusters, Ksar Pistachios, And Marrakesh Pistachios, Due To The Expanded Recall By Setton Pistachio Of Terra Bella, Inc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Medford, OR -- April 9, 2009 --- Harry and David, of Medford, Oregon, has initiated a nationwide voluntary recall of six Harry & David products, Caramels and Clusters, a Capiz Chocolate Tower containing Caramels and Clusters, a Directions Engineering Buffet containing Caramels and Nut Clusters, a Garden Tote aka Garden Party Tote aka Garden Delight Basket containing Sahale/Harry & David Ksar Pistachios, a Start the Party Wine Gift Basket aka Start the Party with Wine Basket containing Sahale/Harry & David Ksar Pistachios and Sahale/Harry & David Marrakesh Pistachios. These products contain pistachios that may be part of the recall by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. due to possible contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail and elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneruysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Direct Marketing Products (mail order) distributed throughout the United States and Canada beginning October 2008.

Capiz Three Box Tower – A gift tower consisting of three wooden boxes with lacquered shells on the lids: The top box contains a 4.3 oz. assortment of 10 caramel and nut candies. Pistachios are in the one dark chocolate pistachio cluster candy in the assortment (UPC7 8099430816 9). The middle box contains 16 candies containing an assortment of mendiant flavors. Each piece is individually wrapped in plastic. The dark chocolate (5 each) and white chocolate (5 each) flavors contain pistachios. The bottom box contains an assortment of chocolate candies that do not contain pistachios. All lots are being recalled.

Direction Engineering Buffet – A basket containing: a 10 oz. box of Caramels and Clusters containing two chocolate pistachio cluster candies (UPC 7 8099430848 0), a turkey breast, pears, sesame crackers, English muffin bread, honey dill mustard, cheeses, caramel corn candy. All lots are being recalled.

Garden Tote aka Garden Party Tote aka Garden Delight Basket containing a 2 oz bag of Sahale Snacks/Harry & David Ksar Pistachios, crackers, cheese, and condiments in a cloth tote. Affected pistachio bags have a “best by” date of 10/30/09, 11/20/09 or 11/27/09. UPC 8 9386900001 0.

Start the Party Wine Gift Basket aka Start the Party with Wine Basket containing a 2 oz. bag Sahale Snacks/Harry & David Ksar Pistachios, crackers, bagel chips, cheese, condiments, and trail mix in a basket. Affected pistachio bags have a “best by” date of 10/30/09, 11/20/09 or 11/27/09. UPC 8 9386900001 0.

Note: The Caramels and Nut Clusters sold direct marketing (mail order) as stand alone 10 oz. boxes (not in towers, baskets or gift boxes) are NOT affected by this recall.

Harry and David Store Products distributed exclusively in Harry and David Stores in the United States beginning mid November 2008.

Caramels and Clusters – A 10 oz. box of assorted caramel and nut candies. Pistachios are in the two dark chocolate pistachio cluster candies in the assortment. The lot codes of affected products start with: 3188M, 3248M, 3258M, 3518M and 3528M. These lot codes are printed on the plastic wrapper covering the base of the box of candy. UPC 7 8099475181 1

Sahale Snacks/Harry & David branded Marrakesh Pistachios – a 2 oz. plastic bag of shelled pistachios. “Best by” dates 11/13/09, 11/27/09 and 12/25/09. UPC 8 9386900587 9

There have been no illnesses or injuries reported to date affiliated with these products. Anyone concerned about an illness/injury should contact a physician immediately. Harry and David has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Consumers with any of these products may return them to Harry and David for a full refund. Store products may be returned to Harry and David Stores. Direct marketing (mail, fax, phone and internet orders) customers should call the Customer Service line listed below.
