Storm surge reduction by wetlands
Posted: 6:31 AM EDT on May 08, 2009
It has long been argued that coastal wetlands provide critical protection against incoming hurricane storm surges, and that restoration of lost wetlands should be a key component of any strategy to protect vulnerable regions such as New Orleans. Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, May 10, 2009.
Several weather disturbances produced unsettling weather activity across the nation on Sunday.
In the South, a frontal boundary system remained stretched from Texas to South Carolina throughout the day. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico combined with afternoon heating to create enhanced instability across the regions. This translated into areas of light to moderate showers, with periods of heavy, localized rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail. Thus far, there have been six reports of hail. Three incidents of nickel sized hail (0.88 inches) to golf ball sized hail (1.75 inches) were reported in Garvin and Pontotoc Counties, Oklahoma. Quarter sized hail (1.00 inch) was reported in Morehouse and West Carroll Counties, Louisiana, while nickel sized hail was reported in Dorchester County, South Carolina. No damages were associated with these reports. Areas of eastern Texas to southern South Carolina remained at slight risk for severe weather development throughout the afternoon.
Meanwhile, a wave of energy pushed through the Central US and triggered light showers and sprinkles across the Central Plains and the Mid-Mississippi Valley.
Elsewhere, instability over Montana yielded to showers and thunderstorms with strong winds during the afternoon. The remainder of the West saw warm and dry conditions.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of 18 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyoming to a midday high of 99 degrees at Needles, California.
