Notice

[4/27/09] EPA announced an external peer review workshop for the draft review report to be held on May 21st in Washington, DC.

[2/5/09] EPA announces the release of the Toxicological Review of Halogenated Platinum Salts and Platinum Compounds in the Feb 5, 2009 Federal Register Notice. This draft assessment is provided for public viewing and comment. Public comments received on the Toxicological Review within 60 days after the release of the FRN will be provided to the external peer reviewers for their consideration. Any comments not received within the requested time period will be considered by EPA in their revisions. The date and location of the external peer review meeting will be provided in a separate announcement.

EPA conducted a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of halogenated platinum salts and platinum compounds that will appear in the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database.
Background
The draft Toxicological Review of Halogenated Platinum Salts and Platinum Compounds provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to Halogenated Platinum Salts and Platinum Compounds. The two major uses of Pt compounds are in jewelry and in automotive emission control catalysts (catalytic converters). Evidence suggests that vehicles equipped with catalytic converters represent a significant source of Pt in ambient air, especially in areas heavily populated with automotive vehicles. Use of Pt compounds as fuel-borne catalysts in diesel fuel vehicles presents another potential source of environmental Pt.

This assessment contains the derivation of a chronic reference concentration.
