Radio Projects

Radio projects use scholarship, interviews, archival recordings, music, and narration to explore a range of humanities topics. The programs below provide a sampling of humanities-based radio programs supported by NEH. Additional programs can be found in the Media Log.

Behind the Veil

Behind the Veil, two one-hour programs and a series of modules, was designed for NPR's All Things Considered. Produced by Minnesota Public Radio, the program explores the struggles and achievements of African Americans during the Jim Crow period in the American South (1870-1960).

StoryLines America

StoryLines America, a thirteen-part series, features talk-show broadcasts about regional literature and American identity. Through a partnership of public radio stations, public libraries, regional authors, and scholars, the call-in programs were broadcast in the Northwest, Southwest, Southeast, Midwest, and California. The most recent series, Storylines Midwest, was produced by Michigan Radio-WUOM in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

American Popular Song

The American Popular Song Series, a six-part production produced by WHYY/Philadelphia, appeared as "special editions" of Fresh Air with Terry Gross. The shows explore American popular song as a reflection of cultural issues and historical themes in America from 1885 to 1945. Yiddish Radio Project

The Yiddish Radio Project, a series on Yiddish radio and American Jewish immigrant culture, was broadcast on NPR's All Things Considered in the spring of 2002. Lost and Found Sound

Lost and Found Sound: An American Record, a fifty-two-week series of documentary segments for radio, celebrated the millennium by exploring the history of twentieth-century American culture through a variety of recorded sounds. The series was presented on All Things Considered and produced by the Kitchen Sisters.
