Paul Earley Can't you use the rover's arm thingy to push away the sand? like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m26FjxEVIRc&feature=related

Wouldn't that make the instruments at the end of the rover's arm dirty, or worse, break them?

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) JPL team gets a second set of "wheels" to help check out ways to "Free Spirit" from Martian soil.

Source: bit.ly
A second, lighter-weight test rover has entered the testing setup at JPL where rover team members are assessing strategy for getting Spirit out of soft soil where it is embedded on Mars.

Opportunity is half a planet away. At the rover's avg speed it would take 20 years unfortunately...

Additionally, keep in mind that if Spirit remains stuck in its current location, there is still quite a bit of useful science that can be done there. Having seen some of the MER operations team meetings this summer, I can tell you that they are still busy with new work for Spirit to accomplish!

Adam Seems Obama has cancelled NASA's Constellation program. Is the future of manned space exploration in the USA really dead?

Your information would be incorrect, even if Ares is taken away and replaced with a delta IV, there will still be Orion and really the space shuttle can't last for many more years. Constellation is not dead, just severely underfunded at the moment. During that time watch JPL we have many interesting missions coming up like Mars Science Laboratory!

Awesome news! It is hard to imagine why it is not part of the headlines news today. The building blocks of life could be everywhere and, therefore, life itself could be abundant. Such a great discovery!!!

From Stardust Principal Investigator Don Brownlee re "So how did the amino acid get there?": He says "Good question. In meteorites some amino acids may have formed inside the meteorite parent body by aqueous reactions when asteroid interiors were warm and wet a million years or so after their formation. In the case of a comet, or at least our ... Read Morecomet, there is no evidence for aqueous alteration so the amino acids probably formed outside the comet and then were accreted. This could have either been an inner or outer solar system process."

Mike Flavin Hi!
Does the JPL do tours for the public? I'd like to take a look when I'm in CA this October.
Maybe I could take one of the Mars rovers for a spin lol

There's not enough info from its current position to calculate the trajectory. And this is an iron-nickel meteorite, not a stony one as one from Earth would be. It's possible there are meteorites from Earth on Mars, but this is not one of them.

It would be a very nice gesture to name the newly discovered meteorite "Inistrahull" after a small island which is located off the northwest coast of Ireland. Their historic and archeologically significant mass rock was recently stolen from the tiny island by some vandals. Who knows, it might even help them to get their stolen rock back.

Here's a link to the story. http://www.inishowennews.com/07MassRock2.htm
