13 at GMA's offices in Washington, DC - Thanks to Bob Brackett and Henry Craig
for use of the GMA meeting room and for arranging teleconference arrangements
for those unable to attend in person |

June 30 in New Orleans. |

| Division Achievement Award - Upon
recommendation of the Division Achievement Award Committee (Chair, Barbara
Blackistone of the National Fisheries Institute), the Executive Committee
approved Robert Post (CNPP USDA) as the recipient of the award - Information
about Dr. Post's contributions to the Division are
posted. Dr. Post will receive the award
during the June 30 Division Annual Meeting and Luncheon in New Orleans - The
Division Annual Meeting and Luncheon is a ticketed event; tickets for which
may be purchased when you register for the Annual Meeting. |

Who are we? |
The Food Laws and Regulation Division of the Institute of Food
Technologists is composed of food scientists and technologists, research managers,
government regulators, and educators dealing with all aspects of federal, state and
international laws and regulations that have relevance to food and/or food components. The
Division was established in 1989 and currently has almost 1000 members.

What are the Benefits of Membership? |
Membership in the Division provides a means for maintaining
contact with others food professionals working with food laws and regulations. A member is
kept apprised of current workshops, relevant literature, and internet resources, and is
provided an opportunity to discuss common problems with other food law and regulations
specialists.
The division sponsors a number of benefits to its members:
| Annual meeting activities including Symposia, luncheon and
Division meetings at the
IFT Annual Meeting & Food Expo.

| The Division publishes a newsletter
periodically. Content includes news, committee reports, coming events,
abstracts of articles of food laws and regulations, book reviews and other items of
interest. |
| The Division cooperates in the development, promotion and
implementation of short courses conducted by IFT.
|
| This Home Page on the world wide web which includes frequently
updated links to Internet resources on food laws and
regulations as well as related topics. |
| The Division cosponsors a listserv for the exchange of
information and as a forum for the discussion of issues relating to food laws and
regulations. |
| An Employment Recruiting Committee which posts "positions
available" in the regulatory area on the listserv. Information is available to
Division members on a "as received" basis. |
| An annual business meeting of the division is held during the IFT
Annual Meeting. Reports of the officers are presented, election results are reported, and
future plans and other items of business are discussed with members.

What are Our Objectives? |
The division is dedicated to promoting the application of
science and technology to the development of new regulations and the improvement of
existing ones. The objectives of the division are to:
| Present, discuss, and evaluate the impact of food laws and
regulations on the food industry. |
| Establish criteria for education in the area of food laws and
regulations. |
| Develop programs and symposia on special topics dealing with food
laws and regulations. |
| Stimulate research in areas relating to food laws and
regulations.

How You Can Participate |
Members can participate in the Division in many ways. In
addition to having the opportunity to receive the newsletter, attend the Division's
symposia and business meetings , and become acquainted with other members who share their
interests, members also have the opportunity to take an active part in directing the
activities of the Division.
Members are encouraged to play an active role in the Division's
activities by:
| Serving as an officer or an elected member of the
executive committee. |
| Serving as a volunteer member of other committees |
| Submitting materials for publications in the newsletter or on the
Division's home page. |
| Organizing Division symposia and workshops |
We invite you to join us and participate in all Division
activities. Your support and ideas are welcome and will help the Division fulfill the
needs and interest of all the members.

How to Join |
Membership in the Division is open only to members of the
Institute of Food Technologists.
| If you are a member of IFT, you may join the Division by checking
the appropriate box on the annual dues invoice (mailed in September) and including the
indicated amount of the Division dues with your IFT membership dues. If you wish to join
the Division at any time other than the annual dues renewal period fill out the
application form |
| Student members may join the Division for half the indicated
dues. |
| If you are not a member of IFT, you can obtain information on
becoming a member from IFT's home page. |
