Art pieces featured in the Gallery are winning entries from the Big River Art Contest. They have been made by students in grades 4-6. Artists used their knowledge of the Mississippi River, from studies in the classroom and at the river, to create their visual communications.

Big River Art Contest connects students to the science, heritage and stewardship of the river through the practice of art. Students create artwork in three categories:

The Mighty Mississippi;
Big River Journey;
Caring for the River

In each category there are four winners, including a grand prize winner; occasionally there may also be honorable mentions. Big River Art Contest occurs annually, with entries due and winners chosen near to the end of the school year. The contest is open to all 4th - 6th grade students.

Big River Art is currently on display at the Mississippi River Gallery of the Science Museum of Minnesota, 120 West Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul.
