Disaster Alert

Florida – A large wildfire in Martin County threatened hundreds of homes and prompted the evacuation of many area residents. The chapters opened a shelter and provided food and care for those in need.

California - A wildfire in Santa Barbara forced evacuations of over 5,000 residents. The Red Cross has placed shelters on standby.

Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in North Carolina

Disaster Alert

North Carolina – Tornadoes touched down in Nash and Wilson counties yesterday affecting 10 residences and displacing five affected families. Floods during the afternoon affected a 15 unit apartment complex. Responding chapters served 400 beverages, 144 snacks and 150 meals and opened a shelter.

Texas – The Central Texas chapter opened a reception center and shelter yesterday after a four alarm fire caused residential displacement in a 300 unit apartment complex in Austin County.


Disaster Alert – Flooding

Disaster Alert

West Virginia – Significant rainfall caused flooding in Calhoun, Roane, and Gilmore counties on Monday (May 4) that closed schools, shut down roads, flooded basements, and left over 9,000 residents without power.

The Red Cross opened a shelter, provided mass care for residents in the affected area, and expects to complete disaster assessment today.

Mississippi – The South Central Mississippi chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT), opened a shelter, and provided mass care for evacuees after heavy rains caused flash flooding in Green County.

Florida – A truck damaged a gas line on I-95 yesterday (May 4, 2009), causing road closures and residential and school evacuations. The Martin County chapter as well as the Greater Palm Beach Area chapter dispatched an Emergency Response Vehicle and provided canteen services to emergency responders.
