Annual State Conference

ADAM’S MARK HOTEL and CONVENTION CENTER

Dallas, Texas
February 6 – 8, 2005

Attendees have the opportunity to participate in pre conference in-depth trainings, hear three quality keynotes, choose from over 70 breakout sessions presented by students and adult practitioners, and visit the conference bookstore. Networking and fellowship with other participants occurs in the exhibit area while previewing promising and exemplary programs, at meal functions and at other non scheduled times. Topics selected from the following strands will be presented throughout the conference: Drug Recognition and Current Trends; School Safety; Comprehensive Planning and Program Development; Commercial Programs: Exemplary, Promising and Other; Effective Research-Based Strategies/Concepts; Law Enforcement and Schools in Partnership; Prevention Through the Arts, Sports and Other Special Interests; and Coalition Building Through Family/Community Involvement.

In an effort to respond to conference evaluations and participant’s needs we are adding a new strand to showcase Exemplary and Promising Programs; suspending the post conference format in favor of lengthening the Tuesday schedule by adding a Regional Networking Meeting and extended breakout sessions; leveling breakout sessions as basic, intermediate, advanced, or all; promoting increased law enforcement and community presence through partnerships, scholarships and programming; and providing a cyber café for communication beyond the conference. The conference registration fee (includes Sunday Reception; Monday Continental Breakfast, Lunch; Tuesday Breakfast, boxed lunch; breaks; conference bag & materials) will be $175 with a reduced fee of $99 for superintendents, principals and students. The pre conference fee (includes lunch) is $50. When seven (7) registrations are made together, one (1) additional person can register at no charge. The conference hotel rate is $80.

MORE ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Conference 2005 marks the eighteenth year for the SDFSC State Conference, which in the early days was presented by Texan's War On Drugs and the Texas Education Agency. Since 1996-97, the conference has been an activity of the decentralized SDFSC State Initiative function at the Education Service Center Region 2 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

For the past five years, the Texas School Safety Center and the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse have hosted annual safety and prevention conferences which they have suspended as they join with us in 2005 to strengthen an already effective conference. This increased collaboration should produce improved support between schools, law enforcement and community prevention agencies. In addition, the Texas Summit Committee for Prevention, currently comprised of prevention leadership representing more than 25 organizations throughout Texas, supports the conference with presenters and participants. Each year national and international presenters/practitioners join with those from the Lone Star State to provide training that targets the varied needs of our schools and communities.

In 1998 we began a Team Scholarship Program to encourage school staff to join with students, parents, local business/government/law enforcement/media and other agencies/organizations to build a team and/or coalition who will take a close look at their school/community challenges and needs, attend the conference together, develop an action plan, return home to continue their efforts, share the results of their programs/process with others and present their experiences/data at the next SDFSC State Conference. Currently we require that a team be comprised of no more than two school employees, a parent, a member of law enforcement and may also include one or two students and two other community members.
