Nevada Fisheries Resource Office

The Nevada Fisheries Resource Office (NFRO), located in Reno , Nevada , serves as the center of administration for Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex operations. In addition to providing oversight for the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery and Marble Bluff Fish Passage Facility, the NFRO manages, coordinates and implements other programs and activities related to the recovery of the endangered Cui-ui ( Chasmistes cujus ) and the threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout ( Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi ). The NFRO fisheries program manager, coordinators, and biologists work with other agencies, organizations, tribes and individuals to accomplish the following:

  • Manage and coordinate projects under the Desert Terminal Lakes Program, including watershed level restoration programs in the Walker and Truckee river basins and Lake Tahoe that emphasize connectivity, river function, and natural stream flow patterns. These programs support the reestablishment of a recreational fishery for the native Lahontan cutthroat trout and promote self-sustaining populations of both Lahontan cutthroat trout and cui-ui.
  • Serve as the lead in coordinating the National Fish Habitat Action Plan and the Western Native Trout Initiative for the California/Nevada Operations Office (a subregional office directing Fish and Wildlife Service activities in California and Nevada ). These initiatives are national and regional partnership efforts focused on native fish conservation and enhancement of recreational fishing.
  • Identify needed research, coordinate research projects, and provide facilitation and leadership for working groups such as the Walker , Truckee , and Tahoe Basin Recovery Implementation Teams.
  • Manage instream flows on the Truckee River to support fish spawning runs as well as riparian restoration.
  • Oversee and staff fishery program activities including fish passage at Marble Bluff Fish Passage Facility, fish production and tagging at the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery, fish strain performance evaluation at Walker Lake, angler surveys, and baseline research to characterize fish communities and habitat types along the length of the Truckee River .
