The DMV is currently in the design phase of a major upgrade to the insurance verification process. This new real-time, web-based system is expected to go into operation in 2010. See NV Live.

My customer received an Insurance Verification (IV) Card. Now what?

  • Look for the coverage dates being requested on the card.
  • Verify if insurance was in effect during this period.
  • If insurance was in effect, you may complete the card online at www.dmvnv.com using your customer’s access code. The access code is printed on the IV card.
  • It is imperative the IV card is completed on line or by mail in order for the Department to contact the corporate office to verify the coverage.
  • If the information from the IV card is not received by the Department within 20 days, your customer will receive a certified notice of suspension for not responding.
  • You can check the current status of the registration using the plate number and last 4 digits of the VIN.

Did you know: IV cards are not generated randomly? If an active registration does not have continuous insurance coverage on file with the Department, the IV Card requesting verification is automatically generated.

The next step is the Department’s.

  • The Department receives the information from you and forwards a request to the insurance company’s corporate office requesting they resubmit the records electronically.

Did you know: The Department cannot accept faxed insurance records as verification? 

Now it’s the corporate office’s turn.

  • The corporate office has 30 days to submit the insurance record or to deny coverage.
  • When the insurance record links to the Department vehicle registration record, the insurance verification incident is resolved and the customer is sent a disregard notice. The disregard notice informs the customer that the Department has received verification of coverage and to disregard the previous request for insurance verification.

Did you know: The corporate office receives error reports when the insurance record being submitted does not link with the Department record?

If the Department does not receive a response from the corporate office or the insurance record did not link to the Department record:

  • A certified notice of suspension is sent to the customer informing them their registration will be suspended in 15 days.

Did you know: If the insurance record submitted did not link to the Department record, an error report is sent to the corporate office? 

If the corporate office denies coverage:

  • The customer’s vehicle registration is immediately suspended upon receipt of the denial from the corporate office.
  • A certified notice of suspension is immediately sent to the customer.

If your customer receives a certified notice of suspension:

  • Only an authorized Nevada underwriter can give the Department verbal verification to Pend the suspension.
  • Your corporate office can provide information if the insurance record has been submitted or if a verbal verification has been given.
  • When a verbal verification has been accepted by the Department a Pend letter is generated informing your customer the suspension has been placed in a pending status. The Department allows at least 20 days for the corporate office to resubmit the insurance record.
  • If the insurance record does not link by the date indicated in the Pend letter, the customer’s registration will be suspended.
  • When the insurance record is linked to the Department record, a rescind notice is mailed to your customer.

Did you know: Rescind means “to remove or declare the decision null and void?” This means the suspension has been reversed and is no longer in effect. 

When the action has been rescinded:

  • If your customer has been cited by law enforcement, the Insurance verification section can send a letter to explain the action has been rescinded.
  • If your customer has paid the $250.00 reinstatement fee, prior to the action being rescinded, a refund may be issued by contacting an Insurance Verification technician. 

Did you know: To request the refund, continuous insurance coverage must be on file with the Department? 

TIPS
Remind your customers to change their address with the Department when they move.
Review the registration when writing the policy.
The name and vehicle identification number must match on your policy and registration.

Nevada insurance companies are required to report policy information to DMV electronically.  The Department's Insurance Verification Program is committed to making this process as efficient as possible.  A Windows-compatible computer program for reporting is available on the Internet.  Contact IVP for details.

The DMV offers many alternatives to in-person visits:

  • Online Insurance Verification Response.
    There is no need to mail the card. An access code enables online response.
  • Online Registration Status.  New!
    See Registration Inquiry. Use the llicense plate number and last 4 digits of the VIN to see the current status: active, expired, suspended or surrendered. This does not display any insurance lapses or pending suspension.
  • Reinstatements and Registration Renewals at kiosks and online.
    See Online Services and Kiosks. Customers receive an access code with the suspension letter. The current insurance must be in the system and, for renewals, the vehicle must have an emissions inspection if required. Renewals can be up to 18 months late.
  • Driver License and ID Card Renewals online.
    See our Renewal Options for Driver License or ID Cards. Customers receive an access code with their renewal notices and pay by echeck, debit or credit cards. Kiosks at DMV offices also accept cash.
  • Drive Test Scheduling and Registration Fee Estimates online.
    See Online Services. Drive test scheduling is for Class C and M non-commercial drivers who have an instruction permit and have met any time limits or other requirements.
  • Driver History Printouts online and at kiosks.
    Drivers may obtain a three-year history online and a three, nine or ten year history at kiosks. We also have a code lookup page for court, violation and withdrawal codes.
  • We offer DMV forms through the Internet and Fax On Demand.
