ABSTRACT

The objective of the project was to establish the relationship between Rickettsiales-like organisms (RLOs) and withering syndrome of abalone (black and other species) by attempting to fulfill Koch's Postulates and using epidemiological approaches. The goals of the project were attained. Tools were developed to detect, identify and establish that the Rickettsiales-like procaryote (RPL) is the causative agent of withering syndrome in abalone. Based on these results, the California Department of Fish and Game has implemented a policy in which all movement of animals from areas where the RPL has been observed require a health examination and that no RPL-infected abalone may be imported into waters not known to harbor the bacterium.
