New Manager Named for Mount
St. Helens National Volcanic Monument
VANCOUVER, WA ––The administrative officer
for the Gifford Pinchot National Forest has been named as the new manager
of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Tom Mulder, 51, will
succeed Cliff Ligons, who retires Jan. 3, 2006.
“I am very pleased to have Tom take over the reins at Mount St.
Helens,” said Forest Supervisor Claire Lavendel. “Tom has
been deeply involved with Monument issues during his time as administrative
officer and will be able to demonstrate leadership quickly on a wide variety
of issues facing the Monument.”
Mulder will take over Feb. 19. Deputy Monument Manager Maggie Dowd will
act as Monument Manager in the interim.
A 25-year veteran of the Forest Service, Mulder became administrative
officer at the Forest Headquarters in Vancouver in 1997. He has helped
develop a new non-profit group to support the Monument – the Mount
St. Helens Institute – and has worked with Monument finances, partners
and personnel issues.
Mulder started his career with the Forest Service in northern Wisconsin.
He is married with four children and enjoys coaching soccer.
“Many people hold the mountain dear,” Mulder said. “I
am looking forward to the challenges of upholding that trust and ensuring
we keep it a very special place.”
The 426,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument includes
the 110,300-acre legislated Monument set aside by Congress in 1982. It
is similar to a ranger district, of which there are three on the Forest.
The Monument Headquarters office is located in Chelatchie Prairie outside
Amboy, Wash., and has a full-time staff of 27 and a summer temporary staff
of approximately 35 plus a number of volunteers.
