Mount St. Helens Institute Seeks Student Volcano Explorers

AMBOY, WA – The Mount St. Helens Institute is seeking 4th, 5th or 6th grade classrooms to participate in the Volcano Explorers program. Funded by a grant from the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, this 3 month long pilot program will introduce elementary age, low income, and/or urban students to the fascinating scientific studies occurring at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

The program includes: curriculum specifically designed to correspond to teachers’ planned activities, classroom visits by renowned MSH scientists and Volcano docents, a teacher’s copy of Will It Blow by Elizabeth Rusch, field trips including a culminating trip to the Johnston Ridge Visitors Center, and $500 per school to offset field trip transportation expenses. Activities will begin in March and will be completed in May or June.

Eligible applicants will be 4th, 5th or 6th grade teachers from low income and/or urban schools who complete the application found at our website, www.mshinstitute.org and return it by January 25, 2008. Up to ten schools will be invited to participate. A final decision on participating schools will be made by January 31, 2008 and all applicants will be notified on February 1, 2008.
