Census Geography Issues

Instructions for downloading UZA Boundary Files:

1. Register "free" at http://www.geographynetwork.com/data/tiger2000/
2. Enter your password to get a menu listing all the states. Even though the website's heading is "Redistricting TIGER/Line 2000", 2000 Urbanized Area boundaries are available.
3. Choose your state.
4. You should get two menus:
   1. Select by county or
   2. Select by layer.
   Scroll through the "Select by layer" menu and click on "Urban Areas 2000."
5. Choose the counties for your area. Many urban areas cross boundary lines, so you may need to download multiple counties.
6. Download the shape files into a common folder.
7. Unzip the files using commercial software.
8. The shape files are ready for viewing. Open the shapefiles in any GIS software.
9. You will notice that UZAs that cross county boundaries appear in two different shapefiles. You can merge these polygons together by selecting the different pieces and dissolving the polygons.
