United States Attorney in Brooklyn Announces the Creation of a
Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section

ALAN VINEGRAD, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, today announced the creation of the Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section within his office’s criminal division. This section is the product of a Department-wide initiative to aggressively investigate and prosecute crimes in cyberspace. The initiative is the outgrowth of a pilot project conducted under the leadership of FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III, in his former capacity as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California. The new section will be responsible for investigating and prosecuting a wide variety of computer-related and intellectual property crimes, including computer intrusions (for example, hacking and proliferation of viruses), the theft of computer components and software, economic espionage, trade secret thefts, copyright and trademark violations, and other internet-related crimes.

MR. VINEGRAD also announced the appointment of Jim Walden as the Chief of the Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section, Lauren Resnick as Deputy Chief, and Michele Adelman as a member of the section. Mr. Walden joined the office in 1993, after clerking for the Honorable Anthony J. Scirica of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and working as an associate at O’Melveny & Myers. Mr. Walden previously served as Deputy Chief of the Narcotics Section, Deputy Chief of the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section, and over the last several years has had great success in prosecuting a wide variety of violent organized crime members and associates and in assisting in the investigation of many others.

Ms. Resnick joined the office in 1993, after clerking for the Honorable Raymond J. Dearie of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and working as a visiting professor at the Chicago Kent School of Law and as an associate at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. For the last several years, Ms. Resnick has been assigned to the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section and has been instrumental in some of its most successful cases as well.

Ms. Adelman joined the office in 1994, after clerking for the Honorable Richard J. Cardamone of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and working as an associate at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. For the last six months, Ms. Adelman has served with distinction as a Deputy Chief in the Narcotics Section.

In announcing the creation and staffing of the new section, MR. VINEGRAD stated, "Given our country’s rapid technological expansion in the digital age, I expect that the Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section will be at the forefront of this ever-expanding area of criminal activity."
