Gary Locke and David Warm
(from left) U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke and MARC Executive Director David Warm

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke visited the MARC offices during his trip to Kansas City on Thursday, May 7. During his town hall meeting before local officials he discussed tools and resources for the 2010 Census and the importance of achieving complete counts. Locke also stressed the value of local partnerships in forming Complete Count Committees in our communities to improve census counts. Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year. This was Locke's first visit outside of D.C. since his confirmation. More photos of the event are available on MARC's Flickr account.

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act opportunities for the Kansas City region

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is an unprecedented effort to jumpstart our economy, create or save millions of jobs and put a down payment on addressing challenges so our country can thrive in the 21st century. The Act includes measures to modernize our nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need. To assist our local jurisdictions and other agencies, MARC has created a Web site at marc.org/recovery that provides information about the opportunities and responsibilities of using federal stimulus funds. The topics covered are those considered important to our key constituent governments and do not include everything in the Act.

Go green when TV goes digital

TV RecyclingOn June 12, 2009, broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital. Despite this significant change, most consumers will not need to purchase a new television set, but can receive broadcasting signals by purchasing a converter box that will sit atop their older TVs. For consumers who are considering replacing their television sets during the digital transition, electronics recycling is a safe, environmentally friendly way to dispose of old TVs. Full story >
