The History of Medicine Division in the National Library of Medicine welcomes applications from undergraduates in any discipline and current graduate students in library science or information studies, history, museum studies, preservation, public heath or related programs for its three-month volunteer internship program. The program has been designed to provide practical, hands-on and results oriented experience to undergraduates and current graduate students interested in pursuing a career in technical services or public programs in a special collections setting. Future librarians, in particular, can expect an invaluable introduction to the many facets of one of 2009's thirty best careers, as described in a U.S. News & World Report article, The 30 Best Careers for 2009.

Under the direct supervision of permanent library staff, interns will be trained and work in an area of their specific interest and have the opportunity to learn more about how special collections and public programs are organized and function. Interns will undertake projects, or a combination of projects, based on their interests, skills and the needs of the History of Medicine Division.

The History of Medicine Division has five internships available for the summer of 2009. We are looking to host interns in the following areas:

Qualifications: Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program is required. All interns must carry their own medical insurance and submit insurance documentation. Nonresident aliens applying for participation in these internships may only be selected if they have U.S. visas.

Compensation: The position is unpaid, however we welcome students interested in obtaining course credit for internships. We will be happy to work with you to meet the requirements of your institution.

Term of Internship: Monday, June 1, 2009 – Friday, August 28, 2009 (possibility of extension into the Fall Semester).

A commitment of a minimum of 8 hours per week is required. Hours are flexible within the hours of Monday - Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Note: These internships do not result in employment with the National Library of Medicine.

The History of Medicine highly encourages applicants from under represented communities to apply. We also encourage applicants of all ages.
