Hurricanes Gustav and Ike hit the state of Louisiana in September 2008. Since that time, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and its state and federal partners have worked together to help those affected by the storms recover. Here is an update on the services and assistance they have provided since the hurricanes struck. Unless otherwise noted, all data is as of close of business March 11, 2009.
70,247 households were eligible for FEMA assistance following Hurricane Gustav.
$207,817,901 in grants has been provided to individuals and households affected by Hurricane Gustav for home repairs, to replace clothing and furniture, and for other disaster needs.
12,145 households were eligible for FEMA assistance following Hurricane Ike.
$61,011,309 has been provided to individuals and households affected by Hurricane Ike for home repairs, to replace clothing and furniture, and for other disaster needs.
FEMA inspectors assessed 246,911 homes for damages following Hurricane Gustav.
FEMA inspectors assessed 34,675 homes for damages following Hurricane Ike.
32,123 households received $128,463,442 in grants to repair home damages caused by hurricanes Ike and Gustav.
915 households affected by Ike and Gustav have received $24,223,004 in grants to be used towards home replacement.
466 households have been provided with mobile homes or park models.
A total of 53 Disaster Recovery Centers were opened across the state.
56,986 applicants affected by Gustav and Ike visited local Disaster Recovery Centers.
FEMA has obligated more than $366.5 million in Public Assistance funds for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairs or replacements of roads and bridges, public buildings and utilities, recreational areas and other public infrastructure.
The U.S. Small Business Association (SBA) has approved 3,967 applications for disaster loans due to damage caused by Hurricane Gustav.
So far, $115,790,500 has been approved for loans to individuals and businesses by the SBA for damages caused by Hurricane Gustav.
The SBA has approved 963 applications for disaster loans due to damage caused by Hurricane Ike.
So far, $59,467,400 has been approved for loans to individuals and businesses by the SBA for damages caused by Hurricane Ike.
The United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) installed 10,525 blue roofs.
52 parishes were declared for Individual Assistance and all 64 Louisiana parishes were declared for some form of Public Assistance for Hurricane Gustav.
21 parishes were declared for Individual Assistance and 19 Louisiana parishes were declared for some form of Public Assistance for Hurricane Ike.
More than $146.8 million in mitigation funding is expected to be made available to strengthen and protect Louisiana communities against future disasters.
FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism and man-made disasters.
