Download and Installation Instructions for the CUFR Tree Carbon Calculator

Installation files are contained in Carbon Calculator.exe, a self-extracting zip file. The self-extracting zip file allows you to unzip (to extract and decompress) the program files so the CTCC can be run from your computer.

Notes:

  • This software was designed to run in WindowsXP using Excel 2003. As it is "proof of concept" software that is in the testing phase, it has not been tested on other versions of Windows and/or Excel. There is no guarantee that it will perform as designed nor conform to the installation instructions contained herein when used with other operating system or Excel configurations.
  • If you are using a Forest Service computer, you will have to obtain administrative rights to your computer to install the program.

To start, click on DOWNLOAD CTCC link below.

Next, depending on the browser you are using, you may be offered a choice to run or to save the zip file (see following two examples for Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers).
Either option extracts and decompresses the program files and saves them to a folder from which the program can be executed.

The following dialog box will be displayed if you are using Internet Explorer:
screen capture - security warning

This dialog box will be displayed if you are using FireFox:
screen capture - save file

Click the Run button to run the self-extracting zip file directly.

Click the Save or Save File button to save the zip file on your computer without extracting and decompressing the files. We’ll assume here that ‘Carbon Calculator.exe’ is saved to your Desktop. You can run it from there to extract and decompress the files at a later time.

To run the self- extracting zip file directly from your desktop:

  1. Double-click on the file name from your desktop

The following dialog box will be displayed:

For advanced users:

  1. Decide where you want to install the program files and enter that information in the Unzip to folder dialog box.

The default location where the extract Word files will be stored is C:\Program Files\. A folder named Carbon Calculator will automatically be created and placed at this location on your computer, and the program files will be unzipped to that folder at the default location.

You may change this folder by typing another folder location and name in the Unzip to folder textbox or by clicking the Browse button then selecting another folder.

  2. Leave the Overwrite files without prompting option unchecked. If this option is checked, existing files will be overwritten in the destination folder.
  3. Click the Unzip button to extract and decompress the program files to the folder you selected. When the process is complete, a dialog box will alert you that the files unzipped successfully.
  4. Click the OK button.
  5. Click the Close button.

To save the zip file in another location:

  1. Click the Save button.
  2. After the file is saved, a dialog box communicates that the download completed and offers choices to Run, Open Folder, or Close.

To view the folder and its contents where you saved the file, click the Open Folder button.

To do nothing further with the zip file at the current time, click the Close button.
