Opportunities

We will provide information and links to Forest Service opportunities for grants and financial assistance for woody biomass research, development, and projects. Please refer to the links for contact information regarding the opportunities.

  • Fiscal Year 2009 Wood Education and Resource Center (WERC) Competitive Grants Program
The Wood Education and Resource Center (WERC), Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, is accepting proposals for projects that focus on enhancing opportunities for sustained forest products production for primary and secondary hardwood industries located in the eastern hardwood forest region. In order to maintain and improve the health of our eastern hardwood forests, local wood-using industries need to be vibrant and able to utilize a wide variety of resources from the forest.

  • 2009 Woody Biomass Utilization Grants
The State and Private Forestry, Technology Marketing Unit, located at the Forest Products Laboratory, announced in the Federal Register on September 11th, 2008, a Request for Proposals for Woody Biomass Utilization Grant - Forest Restoration Activities on National Forest System Lands (PDF, 60 KB) for woody biomass utilization grant applications for 2009. This nationally competitive grant program seeks applicants that can demonstrate an increased use of woody biomass from forest restoration and hazardous fuels projects on National Forest System lands where little or no capacity to economically use this low value material exists. Visit the TMU 2009 Woody Biomass Grants web page for more information and the complete application package.

Goals of the grant program are the following:

    • Help reduce forest management costs by increasing value of biomass and other forest products generated from forest restoration activities.
    • Create incentives and/or reduce business risk for increased use of biomass from national forestlands (must include National Forest System lands, however, may also include other lands such as, BLM, Tribal, State, local, and private).
    • Institute projects that target and help remove economic and market barriers to using small-diameter trees and woody biomass.
    • Help generate renewable energy from woody biomass, including the use of new technologies.
    • Build industry infrastructure around national forestlands where no or limited industry infrastructure exists.
    • Expand working relationships between local forest products businesses and Forest Service offices.
  • US Forest Service Southwestern Region State & Private Forestry Collaborative Forest Restoration Program
The Community Forest Restoration Act of 2000 (Title VI, Public Law 106-393) established a cooperative forest restoration program in New Mexico to provide cost-share grants to stakeholders for forest restoration projects on public land to be designed through a collaborative process.
