Birds
The White Mountain National Forest is listed as one of the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States by the American Bird Conservancy.
There are a total of 237 species of birds, with 145 breeding species confirmed and 11 species unconfirmed on the nearly 800,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest; Crawford and Franconia Notch State Parks; and the surrounding lands in Carroll, Coos and Grafton Counties in New Hampshire and Oxford County, Maine. The area is bounded on the north by New Hampshire Route 110, on the west by the Connecticut River, on the south by the bottom of the White Mountain National Forest and on the east by the Maine-New Hampshire state line except where the national forest enters Maine including the Mahoosuc Range.
Birders are encouraged to report sightings of species not listed, rare or with unconfirmed breeding status. Sightings should be reported to NH Bird Records, New Hampshire Audubon, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord, NH 03301. (603-224-9909) or email to BirdRecords@nhaudubon.org
