One of the most popular activities on the White Mountain National Forest is taking a scenic drive. The many routes through the National Forest allow visitors to enjoy mountains, rivers, valleys, recreation sites, overlooks and historic sites. Whether you are planning an all day excursion, or choose to tour small sections of the Forest in shorter trips, please drive defensively.

Roads are often busy with both visitor and through traffic, especially during the fall foliage season. If you want a closer look at a beautiful view, take time to pull safely off the road and let other traffic pass. Be especially alert for wildlife crossing roads.

Route Suggestions

The Kancamagus Scenic Byway offers one of the most beautiful routes through New Hampshire's White Mountains, especially during the fall foliage season. A trip across the "Kanc" is a highlight for most visitors to the White Mountain National Forest. Rushing rivers, a covered bridge, breathtaking vistas and possibly a glimpse of an elusive moose are some of the cherished memories. The 34 mile long scenic byway connects with the White Mountain Trail to make a loop.

The White Mountain Trail is the most popular auto tour on the Forest and is recognized as one of a select group of routes known as "America's Scenic Byways." This 100 mile loop trail encompasses all the natural splendor, cultural richness, historical charm and recreation opportunities the White Mountains Region has long been known for. More information about the White Mountain Trail is available at:

If you only have a few hours, or you want to slow down and explore an area more closely, the White Mountain National Forest hosts the shorter Patte Brook Auto Tour near Bethel, Maine. This 4 mile, self-guided auto tour winds through the mountains of western Maine with 11 stops highlighting the history, natural resources, and multiple uses of the land.
