Composting Education Project

Master Composters are volunteers trained in backyard composting and recycling of kitchen and yard waste. The training is integrated with the Master Gardener program. Master Composter volunteers share the information learned from the training program with Placer and Nevada County residents and demonstrate the importance of backyard composting. Composting at home saves transportation costs to the landfills, gives our landfills a longer useful life, reduces pollution, provides a more convenient way to handle yard waste, and produces a free soil amendment that will increase the quality, productivity and beauty of our landscape.

The Placer County Master Composter program was established in 1994 in cooperation with the County of Placer, Department of Facility Services. Over 80 individuals have gone through the Master Composter training program.

The Nevada County Master Composter program started in 2002, with a class of 13 volunteers.  The program is supported by the Nevada County Department of Transportation and Sanitation and the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District.
