As the area surrounding the battlefield grows and encroaches on the borders of the park, concern grows for the protection, preservation and conservation of its natural resources. Monocacy National Battlefield protects the history of the Civil war battle and the natural areas found in the park. There are creeks, fields, third growth forests, historical houses, and terrestrial and aquatic life that must be managed for the protection and enjoyment of present and future generations.

White-tailed deer are found in abundance on the battlefield. The rising population of deer has an intense affect on the herbaceous and woody plants found within the park, and several studies have recently been conducted on the effects of the overpopulation of deer.
