The Superfund program protects the public and the environment by requiring cleanup of the nation’s worst hazardous waste sites and by taking short-term actions to mitigate immediate threats to human health and the environment. EPA Region 4 Superfund’s cleanup activities include both short-term and emergency cleanups as well as long-term cleanups at National Priorities List (NPL) and Superfund Alternative sites. The Region works closely with local, state, and federal partners to ensure the protection of human health and the environment at Superfund and federal facility sites. Region 4 Superfund also works with outside partners to restore Superfund sites to productive uses and ensure that future use considerations are included in cleanup decisions. More Information . . .

- New Office of Superfund Public Affairs and Outreach
In our recent Superfund Division reorganization, the Office of Superfund Public Affairs and Outreach (OSPAO) was created. As its primary mission, the OSPAO will advocate and strengthen early and meaningful community involvement throughout the Superfund process. To accomplish this, the Office will be responsible for developing, implementing, and directing all of our community outreach activities as required by CERCLA and the NCP. It is the responsibility of OSPAO to: encourage and enable community members to get involved; listen carefully to what the community is saying; take the time needed to deal with community concerns; and keep the community well informed of ongoing and planned activities. The new Office Chief is Freda M. Lockhart, and she may be reached on 404/562-8142. - Innovative Cleanup Technology Proposed at Stauffer Chemical (Alabama)
In response to local community concern regarding wetland loss and wildlife habitat destruction from cleanup at the Stauffer sites, EPA Region 4 issued a Proposed Plan in August 2008 to amend the Record of Decision (ROD) for Operable Unit 3 (OU-3) at the Stauffer Chemical Cold Creek and Stauffer Chemical LeMoyne sites in Alabama. OU-3 addresses mercury contamination in the Cold Creek Swamp located adjacent to the two plants. The proposed plan would replace the original cleanup approach for OU-3 and incorporate a new and innovative in-situ capping technology that would lead to less wetland loss and wildlife habitat destruction. The amended ROD is planned for early 2009.

EPA Region 4 and Tyndall Air Force Base To Complete Federal Facility Agreement for Cleanup of the Tyndall NPL Site
In February 2009, EPA and the Department of Defense reached agreement on completing remaining Federal Facility Agreements (FFA) at nine military bases across the country. Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida is one of the nine bases included in this agreement. Region 4 is currently preparing an FFA to present to the Air Force and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for concurrence. Federal facilities that are listed on the NPL must enter into an interagency agreement with EPA so EPA can determine if a cleanup approach is sufficiently protective of human health and the environment. These agreements, known as FFAs, establish schedules and priorities and enforceable milestones for cleanup activities at federal sites.

Region 4 Superfund Improves Its Website for a Better User Experience
Over the past several months, the Region 4 Superfund Division has undertaken a significant overhaul of its website. In addition to carrying Headline stories describing our current work, we are standardizing the look and feel of the Site Summary pages, as well as adding new content such as videos, podcasts and Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds that allow you to receive emails when we add new information to Site pages. One of the most exciting features we have added is a map based selection tool that you can see in the box above on this page that allows you to get information on Superfund activities by clicking on a map instead of having to know the names and addresses of sites. Please contact us with suggestions and visit frequently to keep up to date on how the Superfund program is helping our regional community to provide a safer and cleaner environment for us all.
