Mercury is a naturally occurring element that is present throughout the environment. Human activity can release some of that mercury into the air, water and soil. People in Region 4 are mainly exposed to methylmercury when they consume fish and shellfish containing methylmercury. The environment can also be harmed by mercury pollution.
