Last week, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) continued to champion substance abuse prevention and treatment, when she joined Representative Congressman Patrick Kennedy (RI-01), and introduced a resolution (H.Con.Res. 115) recognizing the goals of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

A couple of weeks ago, while some people across the country celebrated on the now infamous date of April 20, dubbed the pot-smoker's holiday or "4/20", one Southern California Coalition was working hard to combat the fervor with their annual, "420 Remix." The North Valley Prevention Coalition put on their annual event the "420 RemixA Celebration of Sober and Drug-Free Life Choices." The NVPC serves the cities of Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista California outside of San Diego. The North Valley Prevention Coalition was also the winner of the 2008 Coalition of the Year Award at the 2009 CADCA Forum.

Almost 12 percent of children under the age of 18 years of age live with at least one parent who was dependent on, or abused alcohol or an illicit drug during the past year, according to a report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The report is based on national data from 2002 to 2007.
