Opportunities at AED
The U.S. EPA's Atlantic Ecology Division is situated on picturesque Narragansett Bay and is the home of innovative environmental research. AED has a suite of employment or research opportunities available for those who might be interested.
Pursue a Fellowship with the National Network for Environmental Management Studies undergraduate and graduate fellowship program (NNEMS). A comprehensive fellowship program managed by EPA's Office of Environmental Education, the purpose of the NNEMS Program is to provide students with practical research opportunities and experiences. NNEMS fellows receive a stipend at a level determined by the student's level of education and the duration and location of the research project. Fellowships are offered to undergraduate and graduate students. Students must meet certain eligibility criteria.
Rhode
Island State Government Intern Program 
Geared towards Rhode Island residents attending out-of-state colleges and universities (see web page for further details and any exceptions), this program provides an opportunity for eligible students to work closely with an AED scientist in a specific field of study.

ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCES RESEARCH AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM
Research training opportunities for upper-class undergraduate and 1st, 2nd yr graduate students.
The EPA Environmental Sciences Research and Training Opportunities Program will provide assistance to an academic consortium which includes the University of Rhode Island (lead institution), Delaware State University, Rutgers University, the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and the University of Southern Maine to develop and administer a scientific research and training program using a three year cooperative agreement arrangement. The EPA will (a) provide financial assistance to a consortium of institutions offering undergraduate and graduate programs in environmental and ecological sciences for the purpose of facilitating off-site education and training in these sciences; (b) provide research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student to collaborate with ORD scientific and engineering staff in areas of interest to EPA; and (c) increase the diversity of students participating in aquatic environmental and ecological sciences. The EPA expects to award a maximum of four research fellowships for each of the three years of the Cooperative Agreement, contingent upon available funds and EPA Mentors. Based on the success of the first year of the program, it is possible that the total award could exceed $600,000 over the lifetime of the program. During the first year of the program, research and training opportunities will be performed only at the NHEERL Atlantic Ecology Division. Based on the pilot phase, administrative modifications (e.g., the addition of other Ecology Divisions) may be made during the remaining years of the Cooperative Agreement.
For FY 2004, undergraduate projects will be supported, only at the AED, in the following areas:

PRE-COLLEGE ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH TRAINING AND CAREER EXPLORATION PROGRAM
Research
training opportunities for high school students. Geared to local RI high
school seniors, this is coordinated by the URI's
Science and Math Investigative Learning Experience (SMILE) program.
The research training collaboration between AED and the URI SMILE program
will offer many unique opportunities for Rhode Island elementary and secondary
students to receive first class training in environmental sciences. These
stimulating experiences will help students develop scientific skills,
conduct in-depth investigations, and understand science as a career. Understanding
the environmental sciences as an applied science will give practical meaning
to student's academic course work.
For 2003-2004, AED will support the After-School Academic Year Program
which will consist of teacher's workshops, the after school SMILE Clubs,
monthly field trips, the Elementary Outdoor Science Adventure Program,
the Environmental Science Challenge Problem for High School Students,
and the SMILE Family Science and Math Nights.
The SMILE Program will also use the funds to establish a Summer Research
Training Program for SMILE high school students who have completed their
junior year (i.e., Seniors). This program is intended to provide exciting
hands-on research experiences to no more than five (5) senior-level students.
The number of seniors participating will depend on the availability of
EPA mentors. The trainees will participate in a laboratory research project,
under the guidance of a EPA mentor, to assist undergraduate, graduate
and post doctoral fellows at AED. Trainees will be required to attend
five days a week for four hours. Each student will receive a stipend of
$1,000. Students will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements.
They will also attend all activities such as seminars, lectures, and research
group informal meetings where EPA investigators discuss the latest developments
in environmental research. At the end of the program, students must submit
a written final report to the EPA mentor and SMILE director. Students
will also be required to make an oral presentation (poster or Power Point)
on their work at AED.
Upon completion of the SMILE/EPA Summer Training Project up to five (5) scholarships will be awarded to students who plan to attend college and major in areas related to environmental sciences including environmental engineering, chemistry, biology, geology and other qualifying fields related to environmental activities.
