Protecting Fragile Environments

Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce, Oregon

Brief Project Overview

A land cover map of the Columbia River Estuary

The Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) established in 1974, was charged with producing a management plan for the Columbia River Estuary. Estuarine habitats, particularly wetlands, are critical to the juvenile stages of many salmon populations. Working with CREST, managers for the town of Astoria used the land cover data to help protect environmentally sensitive areas. As its population increases, town personnel are struggling to protect environmentally sensitive areas. Land cover and change data derived from satellite imagery will enable local officials to target ecologically important ecosystems in the town, and then implement zoning restrictions to protect them.
