On Thursday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Sean Mackey will deliver a talk titled “The Strain in Pain Lies Mainly in the Brain: What Have We Learned from the Neuroimaging of Pain?” in the Lipsett Amphitheater, Bldg. 10. His talk is part of NIDCR’s seminar series “From Basic Research to Therapy—The Latest Frontier.”
Dr. Mackey’s work is focused on elucidating the mechanisms of pain perception and control using neuroimaging techniques such as Virtual Reality and fMRI. One study uses real-time fMRI images to show patients how their brain functions when in pain, and trains them to gain more control of their pain experience through relaxation and other cognitive techniques. Another project uses neuroimaging to investigate how chronic pain causes changes within the brain that amplify and maintain pain.
Dr. Mackey is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesia and Neurosciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also a co-director of the Stanford Pain Research and Clinical Center, which brings together clinicians, researchers, engineers, and patients to work toward solving the problem of chronic pain.
