Source Characterization Study

The objective for this study is to provide a refined estimate of the relative potential environmental contributions (in water and sediment) of selected emerging contaminants from a variety of urban (e.g. septic tanks, municipal effluent, municipal biosolids, municipal holding ponds, hospital waste) and agricultural (poultry, swine, dairy, and cattle operations) waste sources. This information will help researchers relate environmental occurrence, fate and transport processes to the original sources and pathways of emerging contaminants.

A variety of animal and human sources of waste were sampled as part of the source characterization study
