Signage is one of Harpers Ferry Center's newest
product offerings. Responsibility for the Servicewide sign program
was first given to HFC in 1999 by Deputy Director Galvin, and formally
assigned to the Center upon Director Mainella's approval of Director's
Order 52C (PDF)
in September, 2003.
Initial efforts relating to the sign program included the completion
of of specifications for the design, fabrication, and installation
of a wide range of outdoor sign types, the prototyping and field
testing of sign hardware components, the development and testing
of a custom NPS typeface for highway signs, and the negotiation
of the approval of the new standards by the Federal Highway Administration. Current efforts by the Office of NPS Identity (the Harpers Ferry
Center office responsible for the sign standards) are focused on
identifying and establishing contracts with private-sector sign
design and manufacturing firms and on creating a Servicewide sign
ordering and delivery system.
The new standards have been completed and are available to NPS personnel on the National Park Service UniGuide Website.
