Site Description
The Standard T Chemical Company facility was located at 1312 Elizabeth Avenue, on a 2.1 acre parcel in an industrially zoned area of Linden, New Jersey. Standard T produced specialty inks, lacquers and varnishes for marking electrical wire and cable. It operated this facility from 1925 to 1986. Operations at the facility incorporated the use of solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone and toluene, and the waste solvents were stored in an area containing twenty 55-gallon drums. Standard T also stored solvents and varnishes in underground storage tanks, which they later excavated and removed from the site.
The company ceased all operations at this site in 1986, triggering the Industrial Site Recovery Act of New Jersey, which requires investigation and, if necessary, cleanup. Standard T completed these requirements and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) closed this case in October 1997, granting Standard T Chemical Co a "no further determination" for the site.
Potential Threats and Contaminants
Unknown historical releases are believed to have contaminated the soils with volatile organic compounds and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). However, the groundwater was not impacted.
Cleanup Approach and Progress
Standard T demolished and removed all of the on-site structures, and then excavated and removed all of the underground storage tanks. Investigations found that only the site soils were impacted, so Standard T excavated 1,800 cubic yards of soil contaminated with volatile organics and PCBs. Standard T installed a soil cap over the remainder of the contaminated soil and recorded a deed restriction to prevent disturbance of this area.
All of the work was completed and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) closed the case in October 1997.
