Site Description

The McGuire Air Force Base is located at 2401 Vandenber Avenue in Wrightstown, New Jersey. The McGuire Air Force Base is an active facility that occupies 3,536 acres within the Pinelands National Reserve. There have been military operations at the base since it was created in 1937. The primary mission of McGuire is to provide massive, rapid-response airlift capabilities for military forces in combat. McGuire's operations include military transport, aircraft maintenance, refueling, and storage.

Potential Threats and Contaminants

Contamination has occurred at the site because of spills and releases from storage drums and underground storage tanks, as well as leaks from out-of-service transformers stored at the Defense Reutilization Marketing Office. Contamination also occurred from chemical waste disposed in the landfills at the site, and leaks in storage tanks at the bulk fuel storage area. Contaminants detected in site soil, groundwater and surface water include volatile organic chemicals (such as trichloroethene, benzene, ethylbenzene and xylene), metals (including copper, lead, and mercury), and PCBs.

Cleanup Approach and Progress

McGuire Air Force Base is a Federal Superfund site that is listed on the National Priorities List (NPL). Remediation at the site is being addressed by the Air Force with EPA Superfund and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) oversight. The Installation Restoration Program (IRP) is underway to identify, investigate and control the migration of contaminants at the base. McGuire has conducted numerous cleanup activities, which included the removal of underground storage tanks and contaminated soils, the covering of one of the landfills to prevent the migration of contamination, and the installation of wells to detect groundwater contamination.

A Federal Facility Agreement and a Basewide Management Action Plan are being developed. An inventory of remediation sites has been developed. Investigation and remediation is underway at several contaminated areas of the base. A long term schedule for the cleanup of the McGuire Air Force Base is planned.
