Site Description

Aristech Chemical Corporation is located on 1711 West Elizabeth Avenue in Linden, New Jersey. The site was used for the manufacture of polyester resins from about 1950 until 1980, when production was reduced. Since 1980, two pilot plants have operated intermittently to produce specialty resins. Pilot plants produce small batches of the product to determine how best to manufacture the product in commercial quantities.

Aristech ceased their limited operations at this site in 1998. Aristech owned one lot and leased three lots for their operations at this site. Only Aristech operated at the site on the leased lots. Aristech has sold its owned lot to another chemical company. The site comprises about 3.25 acres in an area of Linden that is predominately industrial, but there are some commercial and residential properties in the area. Amtrak's Northeast Corridor High Speed Rail Line runs along the eastern edge of the site.

Potential Threats and Contaminants

Various organic compounds were detected in the soil at the site, including PCBs, styrene, ethylbenzene and other contaminants. Several parts of the site contributed to its contamination, including the pilot plants, the distillate incinerator, the above-ground storage tanks, and a raw-material storage area. The groundwater at the site is contaminated with benzene and ethylbenzene.

Cleanup Approach and Progress

Remediation of the entire site is being done under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Property Transfer Program. Contaminated soil was excavated and transported off-site for proper disposal. A durable asphalt and concrete cover was installed over all unpaved areas of residual contamination. A remedial program was implemented in the areas of impacted groundwater to stimulate degradation of the contaminants. The groundwater contamination does not extend off site and it is expected to remain on site. There are no drinking water wells in the area.

PCB-impacted soil is present in off-site areas along the southeastern site boundary on Amtrak property. A plan for the remediation of the off-site property is being developed and will be implemented to complete the remediation at the site. Groundwater monitoring and sampling at the site will continue to assure that the migration of contaminated groundwater is under control.
