GROUND WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 73.06

Subject: INFORMATION - Reprint of paper, "Subsidence and Its
                        Control," by J. F. Poland.

The subject paper, which was published as part of American
Association of Petroleum Geologists Memoir 18, Underground Waste
Management and Environmental Implications, is enclosed for the
information of you and your staff. The paper describes known
instances of subsidence and their causes. The report also
describes in some detail the measurement and control of
subsidence, and relates subsidence phenomena to deep-well waste
disposal.

Subsidence is likely to be a growing problem in parts of the
country with increasing ground-water development and subsurface
waste emplacement.
