GROUND WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 70.6

To: Regional Hydrologists and District Chiefs, WRD

From: Chief, Ground Water Branch, WRD

Subject: WASTE DISPOSAL - Recent articles on technology of
                           subsurface waste disposal.

A. N. Turcan, Jr., has called attention to three recent articles
on waste-disposal wells and related hydrologic and geologic
problems, and references to these articles are relayed here for
your information. We can supply single copies on request.

     Slagle, K. A., and Stogner, N. M., 1969, Oil fields yield new
deep-well disposal technique: Water and Sewage Works,
     v. 116, no. 6, p. 238-244. June

Concerns the application of oil-field technology to deep disposal
and the design of injection wells. Precautions are emphasized.

     Walker, W. R., and Stewart, R. C., 1968, Deep-well disposal
of wastes: Am. Soc. Civil Engineers Proc., Sanitary Eng.
     Div. Jour., v. 94, SA-5, P. 945-968.

Concerns geology, economics, legal aspects, compatibility, well
construction, and injection monitoring involved in disposal
practices.

Veir, B. B., 1969, Deep well disposal pays off at Celanese
chemical plant: Water and Sewage Works, v. 116, no. 5,
     p. IW 21-IW 24. May

Stresses the need for proper planning and detailed knowledge of
the type of waste and the chemical and physical quality of the
fluid in the receiving zone.
