Clinical Trials Funding Strategies

The NINDS envisions that the clinical development of a new treatment will occur in three stages, each supported by a different funding mechanism: One or more pilot studies, followed by a period of planning for a definitive clinical trial and developing the study manual of operations and data collection forms, and then the definitive clinical trial. Investigators interested in submitting a grant application for a definitive (i.e., Phase III) clinical trial may submit the application through the usual R01 mechanism or as a cooperative agreement (U01).
