Dialogue Session on Advancing the Regulatory Development Profession

Regulatory Matters Workshop

September 18, 2008
Washington, D.C.

In 2007, EPA sponsored a conference on Best Practices in Regulatory Development. Attended by more than 130 professionals representing 20 federal agencies, the conference allowed participants to share best practices and identify ways to improve the future of regulatory development. Inspired by the remarks and writings of American University President Cornelius Kerwin, an overwhelming number of participants supported efforts to more formally recognize regulatory development as a unique professional role within public policy and provide targeted training and networking opportunities to rule writers. As part of its Regulatory Matters program, EPA spearheaded the exploration of this idea by sponsoring a dialogue session on Advancing the Regulatory Development Profession.
