Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect
April 2003
- - -

The purpose of this document is to disclose the expected effects to the human environment by the proposed rehabilitation of the South Rim and North Rim firing ranges. The human environment is defined as the natural and physical environment and the relationship of people with that environment. This project focuses on the rehabilitation of two firing ranges located on lands administered by the Grand Canyon National Park, in Coconino County, Arizona. One is situated on the North Rim and the other on the South Rim. Construction activity will be confined to previously disturbed areas within each range: approximately 1.0 acres on the South Rim range, and 0.5 acres on the North Rim range. Public Comment period for the EA/AEF ended July 21, 2003.

This project has three basic components:

  1. Lead reduction in the areas of highest lead concentration at both ranges
  2. Construction of a bullet-collection system at each range
  3. Rehabilitation of existing facilities at each range.

This Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect (EA/AEF) is available as a PDF file and as a text file. PDF files retain the look and feel of the original document (including typography, page layout, and graphics), text files do not.

Scoping Letter
February 2003
- - -

On February 20, 2003 the National Park Service sent out a Scoping Letter seeking comments on three proposed projects: the rehabilitation of two firing ranges, modification of the Market Plaza Bus Stop, and improving safety and accessibility at Mather Point. One of the firing ranges is located on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park. All of the other projects are located on the South Rim. The purpose of the scoping letter is to describe the initial proposed action for the project and to solicit comments from those who might have issues or concerns regarding the proposal before the environmental analysis for the project is begun. Public comment for the Scoping Letter ended March 21, 2003.
