Safety Administration (FMCSA) Administrator Annette M. Sandberg
is a nationally recognized expert on law enforcement and traffic
safety. As Chief of the Washington State Patrol for six years, Ms.
Sandberg led an agency with a biennial budget of $321 million and
more than 2,200 employees. When appointed to the position in 1995,
she was the first woman in the country to lead a state police agency.
Her passion for highway safety comes from more than 17 years in
a variety of law enforcement, supervisory and administrative posts
with the Washington State Patrol.
In November of 2002,
Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta appointed Ms. Sandberg as
Deputy Administrator of FMCSA. After the departure of the previous Administrator,
Secretary Mineta designated Ms. Sandberg as Acting Administrator. The
agency of more than 1,000 employees is dedicated to improving truck and
bus safety on the nation's highways, and its safety goal is to reduce
the large truck fatality rate by 41 percent from 1996 to 2008. FMCSA has
offices in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
Before her appointment
as FMCSA Deputy Administrator, Ms. Sandberg served as Deputy Administrator
of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With more
than 600 employees and a $403 million annual budget, NHTSA is responsible
for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor-vehicle
crashes.
An attorney by training,
Ms. Sandberg received her law degree from the University of Puget Sound
School of Law in 1993. She received an M.B.A. in 1988 from City University
in Bellevue, Washington, graduating magna cum laude. In 1996, she was
selected to attend an executive institute at Harvard University's John
F. Kennedy School of Government. She was also chosen to attend the FBI's
National Executive Institute in 1998.
Women in Communications,
Inc., named Ms. Sandberg "Woman of Achievement" in 1996. She
was presented the "National Public Service Award" by the American
Society for Public Administration and the National Academy of Public Administration
in 1999. She has served as the Vice President and Executive Board Officer
of the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association. In addition, she
has served on several national panels concerning issues related to ethnicity
and race relations in law enforcement.
Before her appointment
as NHTSA's Deputy Administrator, Ms. Sandberg practiced law with the Maple
Valley Law Group, representing employers in labor and employment matters.
